We spent our Sunday in Plymouth California enjoying a couple of the newest wineries in the region.

First stop, the not so new Jeff Runquist Wines.  All of Jeff’s wines share a theme of fresh fruit reflective of the
varietal flavors inherent in the grapes. Jeff selects grapes from
vineyards that provide rich full flavors without loads of astringent

Leaving Runquist, we headed north.
Whoa!  What caught our eye was a  fabulous modern boutique winery, Andis.  Quickly turning in we couldn’t wait to get inside!  Andis produces wines from their 25
acre Estate vineyard as well as some of the best vineyards in the
Sierra Foothills.  Combining traditional and innovative wine making  to make wines that we thought delicious – all of the
fruit is hand sorted and fermented in small lots to promote complexity,
diversity of style, and varietal correctness.   We enjoyed each of their wines from the 2011 Sauvignon Blanc, the 2010 Barbera, the 09 Zinfandel, and our favorite, the 2009 reserve Cab Franc.  Aged in a concrete egg shaped tank.
Composed of 100% Cabernet Franc, the delicate and perfumed nature of
this wine was preserved by being stored in concrete as opposed to
traditional barrel aging. The wine evolved beautifully and they bottled
early to capture its complexity and freshness.  88 Points – Wine Enthusiast – 2009 Andis Reserve Cabernet Franc Bill’s Block.
“Let this mountain-grown baby open, but once it does, Andis’ Cab Franc
has classic aromas. This spicy, woody and cola-esque wine would make a
fine introduction to California Cabernet Franc, or a reminder of how
good it can be when done nicely”. V.B. (4/1/2012) — 88
The beautiful tasting room has some
of the best views around, plus there is wonderful space for picnicking.   For you dog lovers out there, we were pleased to find that Andis is very dog friendly.  They conveniently have a beautiful sliding pass-through window to the outdoor space so you can enjoy your wine with your pooch.  Their contemporary design, and fabulous staff, made our first trip to Andis a unique and enjoyable tasting experience.

From Andis we drove north to Helwig Winery.   This
new, state-of-the-art winery with its unique wine cave system is
located just outside Plymouth, California, in the heart of the
picturesque Shenandoah Valley. With its contemporary American barn
design, Helwig Winery is a combination of functionality and modern-day,
rustic charm.
