What better way to celebrate our country’s Independence than a nostalgic trip to Monticello Vineyards in the Napa Valley.  Located in the heart of the valley floor between Napa and Yountville lies the beautiful Monticello Vineyards.  The Corley family owned and managed winery invites you to walk in and taste their beautiful wines in the winery building tasting room or for sit-down Reserve Tastings in the Jefferson Reserve Room and Library.

Known for their Corley Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay, the estate grown wines also include a nice Pinot Noir, Merlot, Syrah, and Cabernet Franc grown on five small vineyard sites in the Oak Knoll, Yountville, Rutherford and St. Helena appellations of Napa Valley
We sat down with friends and opened 3 bottles of Monticello wines –   2014 Rose of Syrah, 2013 Estate Grown Chardonnay, and 2012 Jefferson Cuvee Cabernet Sauvignon.  Being that is was a sweltering 102 in Sacramento this day, we were pleased to start with the chilled, refreshing Rose!
Our tasting notes:
2014 Rose of Syrah: Beautiful in color, this Rose is vibrant, crisp, and dry.  Tart mouth with lingering acidity.  Hands down we all felt this best served very chilled to enjoy poolside on a hot day.  Pairing ideas: Serve with grilled pork and a spinach & strawberry salad.
Alcohol% 12.6  $24.00
2013 Estate Grown Chardonnay: Bright light floral flavors with hints of melon and pineapple and a dry, acidic finish.  Pairing ideas: Grilled chicken with pasta or a flaky white fish.
Alcohol% 14.1  $35.00
To be honest, the majority of us tasting this evening prefer a heartier Chardonnay with a smooth creamy finish and would most likely spend the $35 on the likes of a Rombauer, or a Frank Family Chardonnay. With that said, wine is like art…everyone’s tastes are different and unique.
2012 Jefferson Cuvee Cabernet Sauvignon:  This nicely balanced cab is mildly oaked with soft berries on the front and a hint of cocoa.  Very tasty!  Pairing ideas: This wine is definitely food friendly, we would decant it and serve it with a nice grilled steak, or hearty grilled steak salad.
Alcohol% 14.1  $45.00

Piece of history…Did you know that Thomas Jefferson was described as America’s “first distinguished viticulturist” and “the greatest patron of wine & wine growing”?

Cheers!
