Last November we took a family trip to Carmel for family photos and a beach getaway. Little did we know we would experience our dog getting stabbed while taking photos at Carmel River State Beach.

What began as a fun and gorgeous day on the beach, turned into a frightening turn of events! Barely into our photo session at Carmel River State Beach, we found a cute little patch of private beach to take a few more photos. As we were talking poses, we kept hearing another dog’s incessant barking. Along came a couple with their dog on a retractable leash right into our space. The dog kept baking at my 10 year old daughter and our dog Laila. Everything happened so quickly! My dog yanked herself out of my leash-hold pulling me down on to the rocks and quickly standing dominant over the other dog. The dog was biting Laila on her face and jowls while the owner yelled “killer dog!” ” you have a killer dog!” “your dog is going to kill us!” Clearly Covid cuckoo!

Mind you, Laila has a small mouth, with underbite and can not bite and hold. She just stood over the other dog as if she was protecting my daughter. As we pulled Laila away we noticed so much blood! My husband was checking her and thought, “this can’t be from dog bites”. Then we saw it, a stab wound on the hind quarters. My daughter, crying and screaming, saw the man pull the knife out of his pocket and stab our boxer girl. As the people ran off, we scooped Laila up and ran to the car. Our photographer and a woman at the beach helped us find an emergency Veterinary Hospital in Monterey

The doctors met us at the door with a stretcher and wheeled Laila away.

We were able to pick Laila up by midnight that night. The Vet strongly suggested filing a police report, and stated what we already knew, “this dog can not bite to save her life!” Heading back to the house, the car smelled of blood. It took my husband the better part of the night to clean it up, and me all the next day doing laundry.

This was such a traumatic event for us. Police, State Parks, and Monterey County reports were filed, and the people who assaulted our dog with a deadly weapon never found. I am grateful that my husband or daughter did not get in the mix. What if he had stabbed one of them? What if Laila’s wound was in the abdomen?

There are some crazy people out there!
