It’s been 5 weeks and a day and I am still having a hard time sharing the sadness we felt when saying goodbye to our boxer Sophie. We knew the day was coming as Sophie was diagnosed with cancer of the spleen and liver. Never in my wildest dreams did I think I would have to let go so soon to my heart dog! Sophie was there for us when we said goodbye to our boxer Stella a year and a half ago. She helped us see the joy in what a dog can bring to our lives. She was there with a cuddle when we were sad, and a silly boxer wiggle to make us laugh. Sophie was also my companion while going through surgeries and radiation for breast cancer. She was my all around snuggeler, co-pilot, and exercise buddy.

We are now a dogless home and the silence is heartbreaking. I don’t get greeted at the door, gone is that sweet face watching out the window waiting for the UPS man to come, and now, I take walks alone. Last Friday my daughter and I took Sophie’s beds, toys, and leftover food to the Sacramento SPCA, and today I canceled her pet insurance. So final!

We started Sipped in California around our boxers. Wanting to travel with them and seek out new adventures, lodging, restaurants, and more that were dog-friendly, we began writing about our travels on our site TravelswithStella. Once we had our daughter and welcomed Sophie in to our household we began Sipped in California. We will continue our California travel adventures around kid and dog-friendly places and share them with you. We don’t know when, but I’m sure we will have another dog in our life and you will be one of the first to meet him or her.

Until then, farewell my sweet Sophie. We hope you are running with delight and snuggeling with Stella on the other side of the Rainbow Bridge
